Plymouth funktioniert unter VirtualBox, wenn man den Kernel einfach in den Grafik-Modus zwingt.
Dazu muss man in der /boot/grub/grub.conf dem aktuellen Kernel den vga-Parameter verpassen:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27.5-… rhgb quiet vga=792
